The Sun News Online has a very interesting article on reigning 100 meters world indoor champion, Olusoji Fasuba of Nigeria. Here’s an excerpt:
On his world title win in Valencia, Spain: It was great to have won in Valencia. To think of the incidents that took place before the final, one would say that there was something to it.
From the Bermuda Sun: So far Bermuda has only one guaranteed spot in the Beijing Olympics – in equestrian, but has two athletes make the qualifying standard – Patrick Nesbitt and Jill Terceira. Those two will compete head to head in several events over the next few weeks for the right to represent Bermuda in Hong Kong (the venue for equestrian).
Bermuda could be represented in five additional sports: athletics, swimming, diving, sailing and triathlon. Sailors Peter Bromby and Lee White are likely to qualify while Athlete of the Year Flora Duffy is set to get a wild card in triathlon.
After playing bridesmaid to Meseret Defar’s bride in several events, Ethiopia’s Meselech Melkamu finally emerged from the shadows of her more popular compatriot by beating Defar in the 5,000 meter race at the ongoing African Athletics Championships.
From the IAAF: Melkamu took advantage of a slow, tactical race to outgun Defar on the last lap and deny her a successful defence of the title she had won in Bambous, Mauritius, in 2006. It was a first senior international championship victory for the 2004 World junior cross country and 5000m champion.
*** Who says Olympic swimming is only for the young ones? Not Dara Torres. Yeah, the 41 year-old four-time Olympic gold medalist is hoping to earn an Olympic slot during the U.S. qualifying trials this coming July.
Erin Philips, the basketball player. She’s a member of the Australian basketball team that won the 2006 World Basketball Championship.
And Errin Philips, the male magazine model. Now, just because she’s modeling doesn’t mean she’s forgotten about basketball. In fact, she’s got some warning to her team’s main rivals in Beijing.
Who says Olympic athletes can’t be successful singers? Certainly not Hong Kong swimmer now turned singer/actor Alex Fong Lik-Sun. Here’s a music video of Alex and another Hong Kong star, Natalie Tong.
Vietnamese weightlifter Hoang Anh Tuan won a bronze during the 2006 World Weightlifting Championships. He also emerged as the Asian champion during the Asian championships held last month.
Friends, I bring you Paraguayan Leryn Franco. Don’t you dare mess with her cause she can throw her javelin at you. Someone should make her an underwear model already.
Argh! Politicking in sports. Infighting among Mexico’s sports officials has made Mexican athletes unprepared for the Olympics. Quote by distance runner Dulce Rodriquez:
“Evidently, the federation is in total disorder. We don’t know exactly where the trials are going to be, we don’t have the details and it’s ridiculous that three months before the Olympic Games we still don’t have anyone selected to do the work. But it’s an example of what’s happening here in Mexico.”
What we find most interesting is the statement of world record holder Natalie Coughlin, who uses the suit, that swimmers not wearing the Speedo will be at a disadvantage: Continue reading →
