Olympian to Watch: Vietnam’s Hoang Anh Tuan

Vietnamese weightlifter Hoang Anh Tuan won a bronze during the 2006 World Weightlifting Championships. He also emerged as the Asian champion during the Asian championships held last month.

Will he bag a medal for Vietnam in Beijing? He’s rightfully hoping:

I’m not 100 percent sure that I will be successful at the 2008Olympic Games. But, as an Asian champion, I have the right to hope, and try my best to gain an Olympic medal.

From xinhuanet, we learn that Vietnam has, to date, “four official berths for three taekwondo fighters and one table tennis player; two preference berths for one gymnastics athlete and one shooter; and eight berths for wushu performance.”

Quote of the Day: Mexico’s Dulce Rodriguez

Argh! Politicking in sports. Infighting among Mexico’s sports officials has made Mexican athletes unprepared for the Olympics. Quote by distance runner Dulce Rodriquez:

“Evidently, the federation is in total disorder. We don’t know exactly where the trials are going to be, we don’t have the details and it’s ridiculous that three months before the Olympic Games we still don’t have anyone selected to do the work. But it’s an example of what’s happening here in Mexico.”

According to the LA Times another athlete, 400-meter runner Ana Guevara, the country’s most decorated track athletes, retired rather than continue training for Beijing because of what she said was corruption pervading Mexican sports.

VOA Report on the LZR Speedo Controversy

What we find most interesting is the statement of world record holder Natalie Coughlin, who uses the suit, that swimmers not wearing the Speedo will be at a disadvantage:

“I don’t know how to quantify how much faster it’s going to make me, but I do know it will reduce drag, and for the other athletes not wearing a Speedo in that race, they are at a disadvantage.”

We don’t know about you but we are beginning to believe that this new suit gives an unfair advantage to its users. What happens now to the concept of “level-playing field”. FINA should reconsider its approval of the LZR Speedo.
