American Sprinter Antonio Pettigrew: "Me Doper, Graham Liar"

Earlier, we asked whether American runner Antonio Pettigrew is a doper. Now we know the answer. From the AP:

Olympic gold medalist Antonio Pettigrew admitted publicly for the first time Thursday that he used performance-enhancing substances during a long, successful sprinting career in which he passed all drug tests.

So our Doper’s List of Shame continues to grow longer. Pettigrew was coached by American Trevor Graham who, as we reported here, is under trial for allegedly lying to federal investigators.

Round II: The Paes-Bhupathi "Will We Play Doubles Together?" Saga

In the first round we had Mahesh Bhupathi proclaiming that he doesn’t want to play doubles with Leander Paes in the upcoming Beijing Olympic Games.

Not surprisingly, Leander Paes — a bronze medalist during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics — poured his heart out “saying that he was hurt” by Bhupathi’s conduct.

According to our source: An emotionally charged Paes sounded more pained at the way Bhupathi has gone about the whole business of teaming up with him and also by the latter’s unwillingness to discuss the problems with him directly.

Despite the current hard feelings between the two, Paes is still hoping that a Paes-Bhupathi doubles team will materialize in Beijing:

“At the end of the day, we will be hurting ourselves by deflecting our focus from the goal, thus putting additional pressure to get a medal. There is no team better than Leander and Bhupathi to get an Olympic medal.”

Andrew Hoy: Horse Abuser?

Nice hat, Andrew. But do you really abuse your horses with your spiked boots? From the Associated Press:

Three-time Olympic equestrian gold medalist Andrew Hoy appeared at hearing Thursday to answer accusations of horse abuse.

Hoy and Dutch eventer Madeleine Brugman, who he trains, appeared before a three-member panel from the sport’s governing body. Both deny the charges, and the hearing will resume next week.

Brugman is accused of wearing spiked boots when riding Sundancer 6 in the warmup to the show jumping phase of a three-day event at Barroca d’Alva, Portugal, in March.

Hoy has competed for Australia at the last six Olympics. He won team eventing gold at the 1992, 1996 and 2000 Games and won the individual three-day event silver in 2000.
