The Flag Bearers: Nigeria’s Vivian Yusuf


Finally. After previously posting about ten male Olympic flag bearers, it’s good to come across a woman flag bearer: judoka Vivian Yusuf of Nigeria. Yusuf is a silver medalist during the recently concluded African Judo Championships in Morocco and is the only judoka from Africa who is going to Beijing.

The Flag Bearers: Ilias Iliadis of Greece

What earned judoka Ilias Iliadis the right to be his country’s Olympic flag bearer? He bagged a gold medal during the Athens 2004 Games and could very well bag another one in Beijing. Since Greece is traditionally the first country to enter the Olympic stadium, Ilias will be the very first athlete to appear at the Bird’s Nest when the Games open in August 8, 2008.

The Flag Bearers: Malaysia’s Azizul Hasni Awang

Cyclist Azilul Hasni Awang will be Malaysia’s flag bearer in Beijing. Azilul is currently the Asian cycling champ and is one of Malaysia’s legitimate Olympic medal contender. How much of a medal threat is he? Last month, he beat 2004 Athens Olympic double gold medalist Ryan Bayley and two-time Olympic medalist Shane Kelly during a cycling meet in Australia.

Why is he given the flagbearing honors? Because he won a gold medal in Athens [canoeing] and currently holds the world record for the Canadian canoe C1 event.

The Flag Bearers: Alejandro Foglia of Uruguay

Why is sailor Alejandro Foglia chosen for his country’s flag bearing honors? He’s the first athlete from Uruguay to qualify for Beijing 2008 and he is ranked 17th in the world. Foglia will compete in the men’s Laser Dinghy according to Beijing2008.
