Eric Shanteau: Cancer Stricken But Olympic Bound

Eric Shanteau is an American swimmer who qualified for the Beijing Olympics a week after he was diagnosed with cancer. Doctors advised him to have surgery now but this would disrupt his training so he decided to put off the surgery after the Olympics. But isn’t he risking his life by ignoring the doctor’s orders? But then again, if you were in his shoes, would you give up a life-long dream a month before it happens just because a silly thing called cancer might spread in your body?

Argh. Life is such a prankster sometimes, no? Mark McGuire has a must-read piece on this dilemma that Eric wrestles with.

Whatever happens, good luck to you Eric. We are in your cheering section which is uncharacteristic of this blog because it generally doesn’t cheer for Americans as they do a good job cheering for themselves.
